must have inhaled a thousand times,
trying to escape my mind,
just pretending to be blind,
hoping you can see inside,
all these breaths,
a thousand times.
must have tried on a thousand skins,
hiding behind the walls within,
waiting for the touch of a friend,
someone who knew it was all pretend,
all these masks,
a thousand skins.
must have hoped on a thousand stars,
saw them clearly from so far,
their light crept through the cracks in my heart,
their shine would cover up these scars,
all these wishes,
a thousand stars.
must have cried a thousand tears,
like anyone who’s lived these years,
seen my share of conquered fears,
grabbed my courage and drew it near,
all these heart-breaks,
a thousand tears.
must have given up a thousand ways,
saw the smile across your face,
a reflection of a courage filled place,
knew this was my sacred space,
all these chances,
a thousand ways.
must have exhaled a thousand times,
trying not to criticize,
all us learning we can fly,
spread our wings and take flight,
all these breaths,
a thousand times.
(this picture is of a secluded lake I found when I needed to take a thousand breaths)
Wow Becky, this one took my breath away. The flow of it is stunning. My new favorite. Thank you for you words of deep strength and encouragement. This poem says it all. I love you. xoxo
Thank you Joanne, I’m so blown away by the response so far.
I feel this deeply. I have breathed this poem, and lived this poem, a thousand times.
Thank you so much Michael, your comment is a wonderful thing to read on this Sunday morning!
Yes, always learning we can fly… again and again. Lovely.
Thank you Kelly!

Thank you for taking the time to read — much appreciated!
Wonderful writing ~ comforting to realize we never exhaust our supply of times, skins, stars, tears, ways …….
Exactly! Right?
Thank you.
I so loved this. I loved the technique here but more than that loved the eventual triumph. It’s wonderful – especially when read aloud. Sending and your super-sized talent much love, Mosk

we all need to visit the lake once in a while
Exactly!
I’m lucky to be surrounded by many lakes.
I love the flow–the form, rhythm, easy rhyme pattern and it feeds into the theme by being relaxing in itself!
Thank you! I thought I needed so be relaxing (sort of) since these usually aren’t! π
Oh I felt every word of this and fell in love with it. Such truth as never writ and in such a fluid and beautiful form. Kudos!!
Thank you for reading and for leaving such a nice comment.
This is wonderful and flows so beautifully. The rhyme soft and lyrical π
Thank you! Thanks for stopping by, love seeing you here.
And if all this praise wasn’t enough, you’re nominated for a Inspirational blogger award! YAY! http://ihatepoetry.blogspot.com/2012/07/very-inspirational-blogger-award.html
Ha! Yay! I’ll go check it out in a bit (I’m vacationing at the beach sans kids!) π
Musical repetition of “thousand” giving a kind brooding, cyclical turn around of thoughts! Beautiful!
Thank you so much… I had a beat in my head the whole time thinking of this.
we breath we fly…we become and we are
