this is that moment,
what are you going to do?
dance around, twirling, swirling,
like the thoughts that won’t leave you alone.
you’re left gasping for air,
but none comes.
you’re breathing through a straw,
don’t you see?
this is that moment,
what are you going to do?
back away from the space between,
see what fills it up,
memories that never happened,
words that never touched your ears,
a warm hug that evaporated from a distant thought,
don’t you see?
this is that moment,
what are you going to do?
let go of that space,
the sand can’t hold you steady,
the water is pulling you away,
just give in and drop your head under,
the silence will comfort you,
don’t you see?
this is that moment,
what are you going to do?
look what you’re already made of,
sugar mixed in with some dirt,
the humanness of caring too much,
the surf spits you back out too,
in that space between,
don’t you see it?
this is that moment,
what are you going to do?
sink
swim
run
hide
smile
cry
laugh
scream
hurl yourself at the space between,
steady yourself on the changing surf,
move forwards,
always move forwards,
don’t you see it?
this is that moment,
what are you going to do?
.
You could begin to notice whenever you find yourself blaming others or justifying yourself. If you spent the rest of your life just noticing that and letting it be a way to uncover the silliness of the human condition—the tragic yet comic drama that we all continually buy into — you could develop a lot of wisdom and a lot of kindness as well as a great sense of humor.

life is lived in that moment, that space between. we forget that far too often.
love this, and the quote!
The spaces between often have the most amazing stories.
Thank you Kelly!
A lot to think about. What are you going to do? The space between is there so we can catch our breath, reflect, put things away and move on. Hugs. Beautiful words from a beautiful girl. xo
Thank you. It really is a place to breathe, to see. Thank you Joanne.
Life is all built up from those spaces in between, and deciding what to do might seem like a daunting task. But moving forward is the best choice I think.
*hugs*
Yes, moving forward… through those spaces.
Thank you Estrella!
Move forward! You got it! Nice write, Becky! Great message!

Thank you Charles!
love your cheerful words, smiles.
have fun today, glad to see you share.
Thank you for stopping by, always love seeing you here.
keep going, smiles.
Thank you… smiles back.
good to move forward…and glad you did…you know what they do in india with the sugar…it’s never really clean..insects and dirt glued to it…and they just put it in the tea and then fish the dirt and insects from the surface..just as easy as that…
I love that story… so perfect. Thank you Claudia.
what are you going to do indeed! I loved the repetition of the “don’t you see?” it was metronomic like coming back into focus before rippling out again – “ook what you’re already made of,
sugar mixed in with some dirt,
the humanness of caring too much,
the surf spits you back out too” – particularly enjoyed – nice work!
Thank you so much for reading and leaving such a nice comment!
poignant pen. WHat are you going to do? we should ask this more frequently and when the time comes to answer, we will have a slight clue. Taking responsibility for life! nice.

Thank you Kellie! I think it’s important to take inventory of ourselves every once in a while. Make sure we’re moving.
Great exposition of life, and nice use of the repeating refrain, with a strong conscusion. Enjoyed it.
Thank you so much! I always love seeing you here.
oops–that’s conclusion, not whatever I wrote..
Ha! No worries.
I loved this – this is a great monologue / exhortation / poem (all of the above).
The repetition really works well here.
Thank you! I’m glad you found me, looking forward to reading you soon!
Do I have to pick just one? Lots of those things sound like fun, except maybe sinking or swimming, cat’s don’t like that.haha
Ha! You nut.
You’re such a cool cat — thank you rhyme man!
sugar mixed in with some dirt,
the humanness of caring too much,
the surf spits you back out too,
in that space between,
great lines there…and all we are given is these moments and we have to choose…but there are a few that are more important and yeah…our decisions determine the direction of our lives….
Exactly. Thank you Brian. I think those spaces that separate where we are and where we could be are very wonderful spaces.
Great lines, nice write.
Thank you!
just as a poem, this is amazing, b!
taking the meaning to heart, this is amazing, b!
you are my guiding light when it comes to holding on to hope and moving forward, no matter what.
i hope 2012 is kind to us all.
*sparkly super squishy hugs*

Oh Dani… Thank you so much for your friendship. xxoo
This was wonderful Becky!! I found out long ago that it’s not possible to ignore what life is throwing at me and that I can’t separate who I am from what I’m going through and that it’s totally impossible to go back. Very, very good advice. Move forward and make the most of life. Thank you so much for sharing!

Thank you so much for this comment — it’s truly well timed in my world to read your words.
we always need to be moving forward, otherwise, we just sink into
the earth
Thank you! Looking forward to reading you soon.
came back to read it for the jingle poetry.
congregating tribes
Thanks.
“what are you going to do” Stand in the rain… and take courage in the moment – despite the possible storms rolling in…
Oh, thank you so much for this beautiful poem and what thoughts and emotions it brought! This was simply an amazing poem!

Thank you thank you! It fills my soul to read this comment.
“sugar mixed in some dirt”
wow at the imagery, metaphor, and power of that line. I loved this one, Becky, You really put a lot out there.
Bravo
Thank you Lance. I’m so enjoying exploring poetry at the moment… just kind of writing and then looking at what is on the page — trying to leave a piece of my heart out here for others to see.
Nice one..I enjoyed the reflections on life ~ I think acting on a decision is the best course ~
Yes… doing instead of being stuck, always the right course.
Thank you!
Becky, this is breathtaking.
“hurl yourself at the space between,
steady yourself on the changing surf,
move forwards,
always move forwards,
don’t you see it?
this is that moment,
what are you going to do?”
I can relate to that, so much. That moment can be the single most terrifying one of you life, but I think that the leap is always worth taking. Always.
Thank you for this response my friend, you have no idea how much it means to me.
Thank you.
Wonderfully crafted (again) Becky. Love your writings and every time I read them with pleasure. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you so much for coming here to read, I’m so humbled by your response.
Yes, the greatest gifts are captured within the simple breath we take standing on the edge.
Oh… yes, I love that “the simple breath we take standing on the edge”.
Thank you Kay!
Becky, always a pleasure to see what you’ve written! Well done
smiles and hugs, Terri
Thank you very much Terri.
“The space between” . . . . a lot to that phrase.
It can actually be full or empty. It can be embraced or ignored. And everything you said.
Nice.
Hope you’re doing well. HUGS!
excellent, your words always speak with power and wit.
Thank you so much — that’s really nice to hear.
I think it is very hard to move on through empty spaces and once we can fill the space between it becomes easier to go forward…nice writing.
Sometimes, I think, we need those empty spaces… it helps us realize what we want and need to fill that space.
Thank you!
A lovely poem about decision. We only get one chance, what are you going to do with it? I really enjoyed reading this.
thank you so much for reading and commenting… sometimes, i think, we get more than one chance.
Wow, I love this. Terrific write. : )
Thank you! I grateful for the response.
“Sugar mixed with dirt” – my favorite line!
Life is such a surprising mix. I don’t think they really taught me that in kindergarten. But it helps to realized as an adult that that’s just the way it is and if you worry too much about the dirt you don’t taste the sugar!
Thank you so much for your kind words! I’m so glad you’re here.
Thought I’d tell you, Becky, that that one line “sugar mixed with dirt” led me to write a whole post in the last few minutes on “little things that help”
I’d be honored if you read it.
Absolutely!!!!!
